AESTHETIC MEDICINE

Looking beautiful is something all of us hope to be at some point in our lifetime. Be it a teenage child, a young adult or even elderly person everyone is looking for solutions to appear younger, prettier and fit. Aesthetic Medicine is such a science that caters to all such needs. Although, it is a fairly new and upcoming field in medicine, it has a rich history dating back hundreds of years. The legend of finding eternal youth by Cleopatra has stood the test of time. Now, after several centuries, the advent of science, medicine and technology have added a lot of expectancy in the pursuit of youth.

A word of German origin “Asthetik” means the study of beauty. It is an art and science that includes procedures and treatments to improve skin, hair and nail. This subspecialty is not just limited to the fields of plastic surgery and dermatology, but now includes Cosmetology, Aesthetic Medicine and Aesthetic Surgery which are used interchangeably including minimally invasive or non invasive techniques for enhancing ones’ beauty and offering aesthetic medical procedures in order to better accommodate the patients’ aesthetic needs.

A Cosmetologist/Aesthetic Physician is approached by patients not because they are ailing from a disease or just to treat signs of ageing but to feel better and look good. This makes the job of the physician even more challenging as each individual will have a different combination of hair type, face type, nail type, etc. and thus has to be dealt with a unique approach.  It needs proper planning, understanding of pathology, underlying cause, normal function to be able to provide the right kind of intervention.

Procedures like chemical peels and skin resurfacing, rejuvenate the skin thus giving a brighter, shiny and smooth skin minus irregularities like fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, photo-damage, etc. Botox and fillers are a boon to this science enabling enhancement of facial features and getting rid of those expression lines. Technologies like LASERs, ultrasound, radiofrequency and cryolipolysis play a defining role in the present and future of aesthetic medicine as they offer safe non invasive treatment options for skin tightening and fat reduction.

As per latest data available botox injections, fillers, laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, body contouring and treatment of cellulite, nutrition, hair transplant, fat grafting/platelet rich plasma (PRP), scar management, venous treatment are among the top most sought after treatments worldwide and I believe the numbers will go higher with each passing day.
